GENEVA: World powers began Saturday a crisis meeting on Syria aimed at salvaging international envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan to end 16 months of bloodshed and chart a transition plan for the strife-torn country.
Foreign ministers of the five permanent Security Council states -- the United States, Russia, Britain, China and France -- as well as regional powers Qatar, Turkey, Kuwait and Iraq, sat down for the meeting in Geneva, an AFP photographer witnessed.
