Egypt protester dies from tear gas

z.hasheaCAIRO: Egyptian protester died of asphyxiation on Tuesday after inhaling tear gas during clashes near Cairo's Tahrir Square, medics and his political party said.

Fathy Gharib, 56, a member of the Socialist Popular Alliance, died in Cairo's Al-Helal hospital, bringing to three the death toll from a week of clashes.

He had inhaled the tear gas when anti-riot police attempted to break up a protest camp he and others had set up against a decree by President Mohamed Morsi granting himself sweeping powers.

On Monday, thousands turned out in Cairo for the funeral of Gaber Salah, who was critically injured in clashes in Mohammed Mahmud street, off Tahrir Square the night before.

In the Nile Delta city of Damanhour, hundreds marched for the burial of Islam Fathi Mohammed, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, who died in clashes outside his movement's offices with Morsi critics.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on Tuesday in Cairo and across the country to protest against Morsi's assumption of sweeping powers.
