PORT LOUIS: Visitor numbers in Mauritius rose 13 percent year-on-year in July, driven by exceptional growth from Europe, the country's tourism minister said on Monday.
The number of tourist arrivals climbed to 107,912 in July from 95,695 in the same month last year, Xavier-Luc Duval, who is also the deputy prime minister, said in a statement.
"We are taking on the challenge to eliminate the low season. Soon we will only speak in terms of winter and summer instead of the peak and low season," Duval said. Tourism is a major source of revenue in Mauritius, known for its beaches and spas, while the island's main exports include textiles and seafood.
Arrivals from Europe, which accounts for two-thirds of visitors to Mauritius, rose 20 percent to 54,483. He said that in the seven months to the end of July arrivals increased 10.2 percent year-on-year to 694,376.
