imagePARIS: The European Union this week awarded licences to import 164,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat under a duty-free quota created this year as part of a trade deal between the bloc and Kiev, data from French farm office FranceAgriMer showed on Thursday.

The award leaves around 18,614 tonnes Ukrainian wheat available under the quota, which was opened in April and allowed for 950,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat to be imported by Oct. 31.

An equivalent quota for Ukrainian maize, which allowed for 400,000 tonnes to be imported between April and October, was exhausted three weeks ago.

Demand for the maize quota was fuelled by the EU's reintroduction in July of a tariff on non-quota maize imports.

Demand for the Ukrainian barley quota remained thin, with only 200 tonnes awarded this week.

The EU has so far cleared 15,600 tonnes out of a possible 250,000 tonnes.

FranceAgriMer's data have not yet been confirmed by the European Commission, which publishes its data on Thursday afternoon.

Commission officials were not immediately available for comment.
