mushataq KARACHI: Inspector General Police Sindh Mushtaq Shah has announced that ongoing police operation in Lyari has been paused for 48 hours.

Talking to media here on Friday, he said the decision was made keeping in view of problems faced by the public. He said in the meantime culprits should surrender to the police.

However, turmoil continued on Friday in the violence-hit Lyari. Sporadic firing, hand grenade and rocket hurling incidents were reported from different areas of the violence-hit neighborhood.

At least 11 rockets were fired on armored personnel carriers (APCs) at Afshani Gali.

In a grenade attack a person was injured who was later identified as Naeem, 25, son of Babar. A police constable 25-year-old Naeem was also injured in the firing at Ghareeb Shah area. The situation remained tense in Nawa Lane, Gabool Park, Afshani Gali and other areas.

The targeted operation entered its eighth day on Friday but police failed to achieve any major progress as the criminals offered severe resistance with the latest and sophisticated weapons. South Zone police also reached Lyari Friday to help in the on-going operation.

Meanwhile, due to the halt of the operation by the police, criminals have captured the "Cheel Chowk" area.
