imageSUZUKA: Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen has been handed a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix for a gearbox change, Formula One's governing FIA said.

The Finn, who qualified third for the Suzuka race behind the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, now starts eighth, meaning Red Bull's Max Verstappen is joined on the second row by team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Australian Ricciardo led a Red Bull one-two in Malaysia last week after Hamilton's engine caught fire with the Briton seemingly cruising to victory.

Raikkonen's penalty also bumped Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel up to the third row after the German had been relegated three grid place for colliding with Rosberg in Sepang.

Rosberg, who leads the Formula One championship by 23 points from reigning world champion Hamilton with five races left, starts from pole after Mercedes once again locked up the front row in Japan.

McLaren's Jenson Button will now start at the back of the grid for engine supplier Honda's home grand prix after being handed a 35-place grid penalty for various engine tweaks.

Honda has changed several engine components, including the internal combustion unit, turbocharger and control electronics on Button's car.

The Briton had failed to escape Q1 on Saturday and qualified 17th fastest.
