imageLONDON: Atelea Vea rounded off the scoring as St Helens won 21-8 at Widnes on Sunday to record a third successive Super 8s victory.

The visitors started brightly and within the first ten minutes Adam Swift had two tries to his name, with Luke Walsh converting the first.

Just before half-time, Widnes's pressure told as Patrick Ah Van brushed off Walsh to score, but after the restart Matty Fleming stretched St Helens' lead.

Corey Thompson collected a kick out wide for a second Widnes try in the 72nd minute, but a Walsh drop-goal and Vea's late score ended any hopes of a comeback, while the game ended on a sour note as Kevin Brown and Ah Van were sent off and Joe Greenwood sin-binned following a melee.

Saturday saw Denny Solomona score two tries to set a new Super League record as Castleford survived a late Catalan Dragons comeback to win 34-28 in Perpignan.

Kiwi Solomona levelled and then broke Lesley Vainikolo's 12-year record in the space of three first-half minutes to take his tally for the season to 37.

He wasn't the only star of the show though, as Luke Gale came to the fore for the visitors, creating all but one of the Tigers' tries as well as adding five conversions from six attempts to surpassing 500 career Castleford points.

At 34-10 down with 19 minutes to play, the Dragons mounted a comeback despite the sin-binning of Ben Garcia, but it was too little too late as Castleford spoilt Gregory Mounis's farewell appearance at Stade Gilbert Brutus ahead of his retirement.

- Wigan fightback -

The battle for the League Leaders' shield will go down to the final weekend of the season after Wigan overcame the dismissal of Ben Flower to secure an emphatic 35-28 victory over Warrington on Friday.

When Flower was given his marching orders in the 56th minute for a late tackle on Dec Patton, Warrington were leading 28-14.

But 12-man Wigan fought back and Josh Charnley grabbed two tries and Lewis Tierney picked up his second of the game in a 14-minute spell to tie the scores.

Matty Smith edged his side in front with five minutes to go, before centre Anthony Gelling settled an exciting clash with an interception try in the 78th minute.

Warrington still lead by a point and will finish top if they beat second-placed Hull at the KCOM Stadium next Friday after the latter overcame Wakefield 18-12 on Thursday.

Wakefield took an 8-6 lead into the break with a Joe Arundel try and a Liam Finn penalty cancelling out a Danny Washbrook score converted by Marc Sneyd.

Jordan Thompson put Hull in front but Wakefield hit back through Tom Johnstone, who scored a superb, diving try in the corner to level the scores, before Mahe Fonua finished a move off in the corner to seal the win for Hull.

The win keeps Hull's hopes of the treble alive while Wakefield, who were led out by Australian prop Scott Anderson on his final home appearance before retirement, have lost six out of six matches in the Super 8s.
