Manchester United have signed Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero as a result of the uncertainty over David De Gea. Van Gaal has signed fifth new player this summer in form of Romero.
Romero said it was a dream comes true for him to play for the biggest club, adding that he could not wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge of his career.
Van Gaal previously worked with Romero when in charge of AZ Alkmaar and was part of the Dutchman’s Eredivisie title-winning side in the 2008-9 season. He starred for Argentina in the nation’s run in the 2014 World Cup final, defeating Holland in the semi-final, when the Dutch were coached by Van Gaal.
De Gea is into the final year of his contract and is wanted by Real Madrid. “We have to prepare our season with the threat that David De Gea is going to Real Madrid,” said Van Gaal. “You need always competition. When I see that a player is better than the player in the line-up, he shall play the next match,” BBC reported.
United has so far signed Matteo Darmian, midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin and forward Memphis Depay.
