Lionel Messi’s family was attacked in the stands as they watched Argentina lose on penalties to hosts Chile in the Copa America final on Saturday.
The incident occurred during the first half when relatives of the Barcelona star were verbally targeted by supporters of host nation Chile. The unsavoury altercation allegedly led to Messi’s 28-year-old brother Rodrigo being hit by an opposition fan. Security moved the Messi family to a television cabin during the interval for their own safety, foreign media reported.
Another Argentinean player Sergio Aguero’s family was also on the receiving end of abuse from supporters.
The four-time world player of the year Messi scored his team’s lone goal in the penalty shootout, but had an unexciting performance in regulation and extra time which led the team towards defeat.
Unfortunate Argentina, once again tasted defeat after coming so close to the victory. They were also the runner-up in World Cup final against Germany last year.
