Chennai Super Kings led by India’s skipper MS Dhoni and Rajasthan Royals led by Australian batman Steve Smith have been found guilty in an illegal betting and match-fixing probe.
The panel appointed by India’s Supreme Court has suspending two top Indian Premier League teams for two years in a corruption scandal. Also, Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan of Super Kings has been suspended from all cricket related activities for life, Indian media reported.
Both suspensions will be in effect from today and will run concurrently. Former Chief Justice of India, Lodha made it clear in the judgment that his committee's mandate was to safeguard the purity of the game. He said the judgment reflects the institutionally firm position of the committee to protect the purity of the cricket. It said the controversy had shaken the foundation of cricket, The Hindu reported.
Chennai have reached four finals, winning in 2010 and 2011. The Royals won the inaugural tournament in 2008. Correspondents say Tuesday's developments will come as a blow to the richest World’s Twenty20 cricket league and raise questions about how the Indian cricket board will find replacements to fill the two empty places.
