ISLAMABAD: Former Test Cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz on Sunday urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to make Muhammad Hafeez the captain of the One Day side saying currently the all-rounder suits best to lead the team.
Former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq had announced his retirement prior to the World Cup 2015. There are four names floating for the position of captain including Sarfraz Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Sohaib Maqsood and Wahab Raiz.
Talking to APP, Sarfraz said at this crucial time Hafeez is the right and best choice to lead the team. "Hafeez has already captained the Twenty-20 side and he has the skill to lead the ODI side as well," Sarfraz said.
Sarfraz said wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed should be given the responsibility of vice-captain. "Sarfraz should be groomed as VC and then he can replace Hafeez in future when the time comes," he said adding both these should be first assigned the series against Bangladesh which is due to be in April.
Speaking about the other options for the position of captain, Sarfraz said Sohaib Maqsood cannot be a good choice for captain as he struggles for his position in the Playing XI.
Talking about the new selection committee to be named in two or three days, Sarfraz said Mohsin Hassan Khan is the right pick to be the chairman selection committee.
"Mohsin has previous been the chairman selection committee and he selects the team on merit which is good," he said.
Sarfraz said after the 15-member squad is announced by the selection committee, the captain should be given the power of whom he wants to select in the Playing XI or not. "This way the captain can improve the team by his say in selection in the Playing XI," he said.
Sarfraz also advised the PCB to allot new coaches for the team as we have seen the performance of the current ones in the World Cup. "If we want to improve our team's future we need to take such steps," he said.
