Former Sri Lankan player Muttiah Muralitharan believes that spinners can play a vital role in ICC Cricket World Cup as the grouping of two new balls, restriction on fielding and the pitches can create trouble for spinners. But that doesn’t mean spinners will be unessential, they will still have a part to play may be a key part to play.
History evidences that the spinners always have a very important part to play in ICC Cricket World Cup especially in New Zealand and Australia’s pitches. At the same venue, in 1992 Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed grabbed 16 wickets.
Mushtaq Ahmed was an outstanding Pakistani spinner, but we cannot ignore the fact that there will always be chance for the very best.
According to Muralitharan, Yasir Shah, Pakistani spinner has a potential to do what Mushtaq Ahmed did in 1992. Worthy off-spinners are very much lacking in this tournament and Yasir has the potential to shine. He spins the ball, will show the extra bounce of the Australasian pitches and in the absence of Saeed Ajmal there is the chance for him to play a central role in his attacks, local media reported.
Shahid Afridi an experienced player knows the conditions and has valuable variations and his ability to slide the ball can easily threaten the batsmen. He and Yasir both need to be very effective bowler for Pakistan. Afridi has already made it obvious this is his last ICC CWC he has one final attempt at the title, which is the just right incentive to bring out with good performance, he added.
Muralitharan has also praised and gave his precious remarks about spinners from different nations.
