LEEDS: Widnes Vikings may have a home record to envy this season but that form seemingly goes up in smoke every time they set foot outside of the Select Security Stadium.
And winger Patrick Ah Van has called on his side to ditch the excuses at champions St Helens this Friday, who have their own scores to settle after a chastening 41-16 loss to Leeds Rhinos.
Ah Van, into his fifth year in Super League after leaving the New Zealand Warriors, scored his fifth and sixth tries of the campaign on Sunday as Widnes thumped an in-form Castleford Tigers by 46-16.
However, the Vikings find themselves perched in ninth after failing to win on their travels so far this season - and Ah Van struggled to put his finger on why.
"All the boys knew we needed to start to play well after losing away to Hull and though I don't think we played badly, it was a wake-up call that we needed to perform," he said.
"We're always really confident whenever we play at home and that showed last week, but it's just our away form that we need to pick up on.
"We had a hard run over the Easter weekend and have had some short turnarounds but there's no excuses - it's all down to us. We don't know why it's worked out that way, there's no reason why we can't win away.
"We've now got to prove we can win two hard games in a row, either home or away, and St Helens are going to come out fighting after what happened to them."
Ah Van has not looked back since joining Widnes after his sole year at Bradford Bulls - and is planning on many more years yet at the Cheshire club.
