BUCHAREST: Astra Giurgiu's maiden Romanian league title was confirmed on Sunday as nearest rivals Steaua Bucharest were held 1-1 by Pandurii.
Steaua had won the title for the last three seasons but Astra, who were in the third tier as recently as 2007-08, have gone one better than when they finished second two seasons ago.
Astra now lead the capital city side by five points at the top of the championship group and have two matches left, while Steaua have just one remaining.
"We made history," rejoiced Black Devils coach Marius Sumudica.
"It's extraordinary, it is what the players deserve. It was a tough year, during which we have become a very strong team."
The club from the south of the country will play in the Champions League for the first time next season, entering the competition at the third qualifying round.
