Australia win toss, bat against New Zealand

imageBIRM'INGHAM: Australia captain George Bailey won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand in their Champions Trophy Group A match at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Defending champions Australia made two changes from the side that lost to England by 48 runs in their tournament opener at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Opening batsman David Warner was left out as a disciplinary measure following allegations he'd physically assaulted an as yet unnamed England player, reported by the BBC and other media as Joe Root, after Saturday's loss.

His place was taken by Glenn Maxwell.

Meanwhile Australia dropped fast bowler Mitchell Starc, whose 10 overs against England cost an expensive 75 runs and brought in specialist spinner Xavier Doherty.

Wicket-keeper Matthew Wade was promoted to open the innings alongside Shane Watson in Warner's absence.

Australia, held to 221 for nine by England, remained without captain Michael Clarke as the star batsman had still to recover from the latest recurrence of his longstanding back injury.

New Zealand were unchanged from the side that beat Sri Lanka by just one wicket in their Group A opener at Cardiff on Sunday.

Veteran spinner Daniel Vettori was passed fit after returning from a lengthy lay-off with an Achilles injury against Sri Lanka.
