imageThere are a lot of people in Ramadan who thinks that they will lose their weight by observing a fast, but they even don’t control themselves while breaking their fast. When you break your fast, and for most people they make huge meals and oily food which barely take any few bites to gain weight. Weight loss although many insist that they can manage it during Ramadan but can be realistically achieved only if you put your mind to it.

Iftar food can be very calorie dense. Oily rice, fried food, greasy curries etc. You might be eating less by volume, but more by calories. Also, you probably cut back on exercise, which could further tip the scale.

The best way to eliminate this is by replacing the unhealthy foods with fruits and more vegetables and lean meat. Whenever you skip a meal, your stomach undergoes detention, it shrinks. When you break your fast, even if the food is a lot less than what you would usually eat, it will fill up a lot faster. You will feel bloated or will feel as if you've eaten a heavy meal, even if it’s just a few fruits and water that is basic gastrointestinal psychology.

Now, if you've actually gained weight, as in, you've weighed yourself before and now during Ramadan, then it’s possible that you are overeating or you're eating unhealthy food. Stop yourself from overeating during this blessed month because it preaches us to be patient.

Eating a large iftar right after the azaan is not recommended both by doctors today and even way back in Islamic tradition, and for good reason. A better alternative is to stagger your eating moderately. Far better to break your fast on dates and water or a simple soup and then an hour later eat a moderate iftar. Ideally, later on, another small meal should then be eaten after the Tarawih (evening prayers during Ramadan) prayers.
