ISLAMABAD: The tenure of four members of Election Commission of Pakistan will expire in June, which will affect important cases being heard.
Justice (R) Roshan Esani (Sindh), Justice (r) Riaz Kiyani (Punjab), Justice (r) Fazal-ur-Rehman (Balochistan), Justice (r) Shahzad Akbar Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) will retire on on June 13, 2016.
They were appointed in June 2011 for a five-year term after consultation between the government and opposition, according to the procedure as per 18th Constitutional Amendment.
The retirement of four members could also affect important cases being heard by the ECP including Akbar S Baber's case for misappropriation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's funds and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq's case against Aleem Khan of PTI for filing fake affidavits.
Only two months remain, and the government and opposition have not yet to start consultations on the appointment of new ECP members.
As per Article 13 A and B of the Constitution, the Prime Minister is bound to send three names each from each province to a 12-member Parliamentary Committee for finalisation of the new memebers.
The parliamentary committee must have equal representation of opposition and government legislators, with eight members of the National Assembly and four Senators.
