imageKARACHI: A meeting chaired by Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah here on Thursday envisaged an elaborate scheme for security of no less than 15000 schools in Karachi.

The Chief Minister on the occasion said that over all law and order situation in Karachi was satisfactory but even then keeping in view nefarious designs of the terrorists the security of education institutions must be beefed up.

"We cannot allow the enemies of our nation to destroy our future generation," said Syed Qaim Ali Shah.

Director General of Pakistan Rangers - Sindh, Major General Bilal Akbar on the occasion said effective precautionary and preventive measures are being taken for the sake of children and youth as well for citizens in general.

The precautionary measures, he said include installation of CCTV cameras in and around educational institutions and also to get these connected with main Command and Control Centre.

Involvement of community in the security arrangements, reactivation of boys/girls scouts with necessary training, deployment of Rangers Rapid Response (Tel No. 1101) and police RRF (Tel No. 15) within the reach of few minutes and launching of Rangers and police patrolling on mobile and motorcycles around the educational institutions are essential components of the strategy, he said.

The meeting was informed that a list of schools in need of enhanced security has also been prepared which is to be shared with all stakeholder including provincial home secretary and the police department besides the Rangers.

A fool-proof strategy for security of educational institutions across the metropolis will be ensured on urgent basis, said DG - Rangers.

Chief Minister, appreciative of assurance extended by the DG - Rangers, said since restoration of law and order in the city the confidence of the citizens has been strengthened on the Rangers, Police and the Government.

"It is now our collective responsibility to come up to the expectation of the citizens and ensure their protection against unscrupulous elements," said Syed Qaim Ali Shah.

The IGP - Sindh, Ghulam Hyder Jamali informed the meeting that there are over 15,000 educational institutions of different categories scattered across Karachi.

He said institutions managed by armed forces education system as well as those falling under the category of cambridge have their respective security systems in place.

"We therefore have to take extra care of public sector educational institutions as well as those private schools run with low budgets," said the provincial police chief.

Jamali said security arrangements have to beefed up according to the ground reality.

DIG - Karachi South, Dr Jameel Ahmed said that there were 917 educational institutions, including 480 private schools, in his area of jurisdiction.

He said booklets carrying information relevant to security measures necessary for educational institutions have been distributed by the police department.

DIG Ahmed meetings with schools' management have also been held and they were advised to raise boundary walls of their respective schools, with provision for watch towers, CCTV system, centralized alarm system and security scanning of the staff working there.

Chief Secretary Sindh Siddique Memon who is also the Chief of Sindh Boy Scouts said that there were more 160,000 scouts in the province.

"I would personally chalk out a plan for their training to combat untoward instances," he said and added that the trainers would be arranged with the support of Pakistan Army.

Sindh Secretary for Education. Fazullah Pechuho said that he had developed a SMS system under which all the government schools' head masters, senior teachers and other concerned staff would be connected via short-messaging system.

On this the chief minister directed him to expand the system to private schools also so that in case of any emergency or alerts they could be kept informed and coordinated.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah on the occasion directed the Rangers and Police to set up check posts, station RRF forces near schools, start consultative meetings with school management and initiate patrolling in the both morning and evening shifts.
