ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the federal government and all four provinces provincial governments to submit implementation report over adoption of Urdu as official language.
The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Mushir Alam and comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Dost Muhammad Khan heard the case over implementation of Urdu as official language.
During the course of proceedings, Razzaq A. Mirza Additional Advocate General Punjab prayed the court to grant some more time for implementation of court orders as the apex court had ordered the government on September 08, 2015 to enforce Urdu as official language within three months.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that it seemed that the Punjab government wanted review in the case. He remarked that governments itself proposed three month time for declaring Urdu as official language.
Justice Mushir Alam remarked that government sought time for implementation of court orders but failed to submit progress report in this regard. He asked what they have done except writing letters since 1999.
Justice Qazi Feaz Isa remarked that the Punjab government files review appeal on interim order but failed to submit any report.
Razaq Mira said that the court sought reports from all provinces. On this Justice Isa remarked that only Punjab province filed review petition.
The court gave four months time to Punjab for implementation of court orders and adjourned hearing of the case
Earlier on September 8, 2015; the three-member bench led by Chief Justice Jawad S Khawaja ordered federal government to take steps to implement Urdu language as the official language in government offices.
