imageISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary for Cabinet Secretariat Raja Javed Ikhlas on Friday informed the National Assembly that a bill titled Pakistan 'Halal' Food Authority (PHFA) would be enacted to check sale and purchase of 'Haram' (prohibited in Islam) edible items.

Responding to a calling attention notice moved by Shahida Akhtar Ali and others regarding sale, purchase of prohibited edible items in the country, Raja Javed Ikhlas said after 18th constitutional amendment the monitoring and checking of these items are the provincial subject.

He said the bill has been sent to Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for the approval and will be tabled in National Assembly after the approval.

He said provincial governments have to establish Food Authorities and develop a mechanism to check edible items.

Punjab has already set up the authority while KPK, Balochistan and Sindh provinces are in process to set up the authority.

Maulana Fazalur Rehman asked the government to take action against the elements involved in the sale and purchase of Haram food items. "The government should not wait for the bill and take action against such elements as soon as possible," he added.
