imageISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was informed on Monday that the government was observing zero tolerance policy against miscreants and there was total ban on display of weapons in the Federal Capital.

The provinces were also asked to fully cooperate in maintaining law and order, said Parliamentary Secretary for Interior and Narcotics Control Maryam Aurangzeb while replying to a question in the House.

She said that there was total ban on the issuance of licenses of arms of both prohibited and non-prohibited bores. The licenses issued during the tenure of previous government were being verified, she added.

Maryam Auranzeb said it was a fact that the orders relating to law and order situation in Karachi were issued by the Supreme Court on October 6, 2011 and August 30, 2013. According to an order passed by the apex court, the Federal Government was bound under Article 148(3) to assist the provincial government in resolving the Karachi issue.

Meanwhile, in a written reply Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan stated that the state was duty bound to protect the life and property of its citizens in accordance with law.

He said the Karachi police force being principal law enforcing agency, had to be de-politicized and strengthened.

There must be no "no go areas" at all in Karachi. Prosecutors, particularly for the anti-terrorism courts should be appointed in a highly transparent manner according to the Constitution and the law. Appointments of prosecutors were required to be undertaken without any political whims and considerations, he added.

Chaudhry Nisar said after approval and implementation of 18th Amendment of the Constitution, law and order was a provincial subject. However, the Federal Government was doing everything to assist the provincial governments.

In this context, he said, following steps had been taken for monitoring, controlling and improving law and order situation in the country, particularly in Karachi: launching of Karachi operation in September, 2013 against terrorists, target killers, criminals and extortionists across the board, and periodic review of the Karachi operation by the Prime Minister & Interior Minister.
