ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Lt. Gen. Abdul Qadir Baloch (Retd) on Friday brushed aside the notion that Article 245 has been imposed in the federal capital and stated that the forces have only the role to protect sensitive installations.
Addressing the upper house of the parliament on Friday, the minister said that the government has a heavy mandate given by 180 million Pakistanis and it has a huge responsibility on its shoulders.
"Article 245 does not suspend any kind of fundamental rights as the armed forces are only deployed to safeguard the important and sensitive places including foreign embassies," he added.
He expressed surprise over the statement by some of the parliamentarians that the imposition of Article 245 suspends fundamental rights asking that what the parliamentarians want from the government to leave the capital city on the mercy of dispersed mobs.
Baloch maintained that some of the parliamentarians claim on one side that they do not want the democracy to be derailed while on the other hand creating such unnecessary issues for the government.
Later, the House was adjourned to meet again on Monday at 4 pm.
