ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Saturday separately staged walkout from the National Assembly against implementation on increase in General Sales Tax (GST) from 16 percent to 17 percent from June 13 without approval from the Parliament and revoking the exemption of income tax for the people of Malakand Division.
Speaking on a point of order, PTI Deputy Parliamentary Leader Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that there is proposal to increase GST from 16 percent to 17 percent in the Finance Bill, but the government has started implementing it from June 13 without approval of Finance Bill form the National Assembly. He said Finance Minister Ishaq Dar should respond as to why the parliament was being undermined by officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
He asked how the FBR was taxing people with increased GST since the Finance Bill had not been passed by parliament. "The government should tell the House under what laws and authority it is implementing the budget proposals, he said.
Later, Qureshi staged a walkout from the House along with other PTI legislators.
The members of JI also staged a walkout from the Lower House of the Parliament against the withdrawal of the relief package for the people of Malakand division.
Sahibzada Tariq Ullah of JI said the relief package for the people of Malakand had been withdrawn by the federal government. He said his party is strongly opposed to the decision of the government.
He then announced a token walkout to protest against the government's decision.
Lawmakers of both parties later returned to the House after reconciliation by the treasury members.
