TALHAR: A sharp decline has been registered in the price of tomato in local market, as it is being sold at the rate of Rs.10/- per kg against its recent price of Rs.100/- per kg that has caused huge losses to the growers.
The unexpected decrease in tomato rates has surprised the growers as the tomato crop was badly damaged by recent severe cold weather in Badin district.
The market survey revealed that in all the five Tehsils of district- Badin, Talhar, Matli, Golarchi and Tando Bago, the 20kg box of tomato is being sold for Rs.150/- to Rs.200/-.
According to the growers, the largest market of tomato produced in Badin district is the Hyderabad but the prices there too have declined and in case the tomatoes are sent to Hyderabad the price offered there would not cover even the transportation charges which are around Rs.80/- to Rs.100/- per sack.
Some growers were of the view that tomatoes coming from Quetta have flooded the market and caused damage to growers of Sindh.
