imageFAISALABAD: The government has decided to distribute disease resistant wheat seed free of cost among 23,838 growers in Punjab.

A spokesman of Agriculture Department told here on Wednesday that there were 23,838 villages in the Punjab province where one farmer in each village would be provided free wheat seed. The government had allocated Rs. 300 million for this purpose and the seed would be provided through balloting, he added.

He further said that each successful farmer would be provided 200 kilograms seed for cultivation of wheat at four acres of land and in this connection, the applications had been invited from the growers for balloting from August 25 to September 30, 2015.

He said that the wheat seed was highly disease resistant and the successful farmers would be bound to give undertaking that they would also provide this seed to other growers after harvesting their wheat crops so that disease free wheat could be cultivated in Punjab.

The balloting would be held in the main mosque of the village, the spokesman said and added that seed had been packed in 50 kg bags and out of total 95,352 bags, 3,244 bags would be provided to 811 farmers in district Faisalabad.
