LAHORE: The Punjab government will procure 4 million ton wheat from growers at the rate of Rs 1300 per 40 Kg.
Provincial Minister for Food Bilal Yasin said this while unveiling salient features of wheat procurement drive 2015-16 here on Thursday. Secretary Food and director food Punjab were also present.
The minister said that Rs 7.5 per bag would be given to growers as delivery and transportation charges.
The wheat procurement drive will start from April 20 in those districts where wheat harvesting has been started and required marketable wheat would be available, he said.
He said that 8 bags each containing 100 kg wheat per acre would be the criteria for purchasing the commodity from growers and no one would be issued more than 200 bags of Bardana in one go.
Bilal Yasin said the growers would not be eligible to get Bardana for second time till they complete first transaction of wheat with the Food department.
The Food department has set up 376 procurement centers all over the province, he said and added that an amount of Rs 130 billion has been made available for the payments to growers of their produce.
The minister said that 100% transparency would be ensured for wheat procurement and the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been assigned the task to compile data of wheat growers.
He said that special committees had been set up at procurement centres, tehsil, district and provincial levels to monitor the drive.
"It will be our utmost and best effort to enable the growers to get due return of their produce", he added.
Speaking on the occasion, the secretary food said, "We will go for aggressive buying this season which reflects from the fact that 70 percent Bardana will be issued during first 15 days of the drive".
The director Food said that there would be no inter-provincial or inter-district ban on wheat movement during the drive.
