ethical43LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Labour Haji Ehsaan-ud-Din Qureshi said on Sunday that labourers were the backbone of the industry and efforts were being made by to improve their social and economic status.

Talking to delegations of labourers, he said the government had increased the marriage grant from Rs 70,000 to Rs 100,000 for labourers' daughters and women workers.

He said the death grant had also been raised from Rs 300,000 to Rs 500,000.

"The labour department has provided Rs 75 million interest-free microcredit among brick kilns workers in two districts for the elimination of bonded labour, child labour and exploitation of brick kiln workers," he added.

He said the department had organised health camps at brick kilns and free treatment was provided to 1300 labourers.

"The Welfare Board is bearing all educational expenses of children of workers in six districts of the Punjab where workers welfare schools do not exist," he added.
