ISLAMABAD: The World Bank (WB) has offered a loan of $ 200 million to the Sui Southern Gas Pipelines Company (SSGC) for improving its efficiency.

"A six-member World Bank's energy mission has in a recent meeting with SSGC's senior management, offered $200 million loan to bring down UFG," an official source said.

The bank's team discussed the projected economic and financial analysis for investment in the company's five year UFG (unaccounted-for gas) reduction plan.

The funds will be spent under the 'natural gas efficiency project' for rehabilitation and leak ratification of pipelines, automation of pressure management system and upgradation of the metering system by employing advance technology.

The company, according to the source, was struggling to stop gas theft through developing business intelligence tools to get into those areas where the theft incidents are rampant.

The source said the company was making efforts to reduce UFG and all departments had been directed to further strengthen coordination to achieve the OGRA's benchmark of current financial year.

As part of such efforts, the source said, the company's measurement department had introduced many equipment and meters including cyber locks, replacement of diaphragm meters with rotary meters.

The company, the source added, had also installed auto adjust turbine meters, highly sophisticated remote control and monitoring system for obtaining live data of customers and from SMS the very next day.

Moreover, the company had procured 1250 ultra sonic meters of capacities of 880 and 2000 Acf/hr for installation on commercial customers.

About exclusivity and utility of these sonix meters, the source said, have data logging facility and the sonix 25 meters have fixed pressure factor whereas the sonix 57 meters have a built-in EVC installed in its system to make correction with live pressure and temperature.
