imageISLAMABAD: The revolution of smartphones stepping into market has provided a great level of convenience to people involved in social, technical and even economical activities.

The introduction of smart watches is further convenient option one can possibly utilize as through this facility one can connect with phone via bluetooth.

Given a low ownership of smartphone, it might take a few more years before Pakistanis will be convinced to adopt newer forms of mobile technologies or wearables.

However, their drive to socialize and to get the latest news, could potentially accelerate purchasing of wearables across the country, as these devices promise to offer mobile features and functions like the best smartphones.

According to a report by Gartner, the worldwide market is expected to grow to US $ 28.7 billion in sales by end of this year. Overall, sales of smart watches are also expected to grow 274.6 million units, a marked increase of 18.4 percent from last year's 232 million.

Smartwatch sales, when combined, make up $ 11.5 billion out of that and will sell around 50 million units throughout the year.

The category is also expected to swell to $17.5 billion, or 66.71 million units by the end of 2019. The category is also noted for its large dependence on smartphones, pointing to an area with the most revenue potential.

As per figures, year 2015 saw a large number of traditional watchmakers jump into the market.

Gartner does appear to put less weight behind fitness tracker margins which, confusingly so, all scored lesser sales than smart watches. With names Fitbit now covering virtually all price points between themselves and enhancing accessibility, this just shows how much guess work still goes on in firms such as these.

The fitness market (made up of wristbands, smart garments, chest straps, sports watches and other fitness monitors) will reach 109 million units in sales by end of 2019.

The wearables may find it hard to penetrate the Pakistani market because smartphone ownership in the country is fairly low. In Pakistan, a 2014 Pew Research Center study confirmed that there is only 8 percent of the population who own a smartphone, yet internet content consumption is higher than its ownership rate. The smart watches future in Pakistan can be termed as bright.
