imageMIRPUR (AJK): The AJK government has initiated an integrated phased plan to make the territory self-sufficient in power production besides to extend maximum contribution to the national grid, official sources said.

The AJK state is blessed with the huge natural resources for the generation of over 20 thousand megawatt of hydel power, the sources told APP here Tuesday adding that the sitting PPP led AJK government has decided to utilize these resources not only to be self sufficient in hydel power production by meeting the local needs of only 400 mw of power - but also to assist Pakistan for meeting the required energy needs of the country.

"The phased-plan involve the utilization of huge available potential of hydel power generation in the area with the coordination of the private power sector", the sources revealed.

Since the natural potential for generation of over five thousand (5000) megawatt of hydel power is available in various parts Azad Jammu Kashmir, the government intend to use maximum of this natural potential for hydel power generation not only to meet it's need of a total of only 400 megawatt of electricity in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and which (power) is presently being supplied by the national-grid to AJK.

The official source revealed that Azad Jammu Kashmir Hydel Power Board, will be taking steps for implementation of the proposed plan for production of hydel power through utilization of the huge available natural potential in the area with the involvement of the private power sector, according to the sources.

Elaborating the salient features of the plan, he revealed that under the plan the hydel power generation stations comprising the power production capacity of at least two to six megawatt of power are proposed to be established at the selected sites with the cooperation of the Private Power Production Board.

The hydel power generation projects both in private and public sectors would not only make AJK self sufficient in the power production but the area (AJK) would also be in a position to export extra power to other areas side by side meeting her own requirement, he added.

The sources pointed out that after becoming self-supported in the power generation, the AJK government will be in a position to supply electricity to consumers on inexpensive/cheaper rates besides determining the power tariff on her own.

At the same time construction work is in full swing on mega hydel power generation project of 969 MW Neelam Jhelum Hydel power project in Muzaffarabad district and Gulpur Hydel Power Project in Kotli district of AJK.

The 135 MW Hydel Power Project at Rajdadhani and 5-MW hydel power project at Jari Kass are also being launched soon in the public sector under the supervision of AJK Hydro Electric Board, the sources revealed and added that the state-run Kundal Shahi Hydel Power Project in Neelam valley district is successfully operating meeting the power requirement of the population of the area.
