imageISLAMABAD: Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoIT) is implementing a project for development of a low cost transceiver to enhance GSM signal and ensure strong mobile network coverage.

National ICT Research and Development Fund had launched this project at a cost of Rs. 1.67 million in collaboration with School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at NUST, Islamabad.

The project is expected to be completed by May next year, sources at MoIT said here on Wednesday.

The sources said cell phone is a necessary gadget for communication and staying in touch with the world in both time of happiness and distress.

They said mobile phone users want, and indeed expect, to be able to communicate inside every building including office blocks, shopping centers, tunnels, basements and underground car parks.

However in some of the areas, Radio Frequency (RF) holes are formed due to signal diffraction which is caused by obstructions, they said and added these RF holes result in signal attenuation and as a consequence the signal quality received by mobile users degrades significantly.

Therefore, in order to maintain an effective communication, the signal strength needs to be improved by enhancing the weak RF signal in these zones.

At the service provider level, high-quality RF signals can be provided by building a new Base Station (BS). However, the sources said this implementation can be expensive and uneconomical as the RF holes are extremely local in nature.

Giving example, they said, some parts of a building might be rich in signal strength while others having no connectivity as in such situations, user level initiative is required and a device is needed that can enhance the signal strength.

The sources said a two way GSM transceiver is a device that can amplify the uplink and downlink GSM signals.

GSM transceiver can be easily installed inside houses and buildings. The main emphasis lies on reducing the cost as the currently available gadgets are highly expensive for single users or even for small enterprises.

The project is also focused at user end and is operator independent.
