ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to submit explanation over usage of resources of the Bureau.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja heard a case on private bank recovery matter, where the accountability bureau sought cancellation of bail of Mohammad Tariq.
During the course of proceedings, Chief Justice Jawad Khwaja remarked that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) could not conduct recovery operations for any private bank without approval of the Governor State Bank of Pakistan.
The Chief Justice remarked that the accountability bureau did not catch defaulters responsible for corruption worth billions of rupees and considering big achievement by nabbing defaulters of private banks like Muhammad Tariq.
The Chief Justice questioned, "was National Accountability Bureau a recovery officer of private banks or an authority to eliminate corruption from the society".
The court observed that according to the National Accountability Bureau ordinance section 51-D the bureau needs the approval of the Governor State Bank of Pakistan; "if it was not sought then a case can be framed against the bureau".
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Chairman NAB to appear before the court along with details of utilisation of NAB resources, at the next hearing.
