imageISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Education and Professional Training Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman informed the Senate on Friday that around 6737 students sent abroad for higher education from 2008 to 2014.

In question hour, he said a uniform procedure has been laid down for selecting students from various provinces to award scholarships for study abroad.

Responding to another question, he said, a total 698 students belonging to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been sent abroad on scholarships for higher studies during the last five years by Higher Education Commission (HEC).

He said merit and provincial quota is being observed completely in this regard

Baligh-ur-Rehman said Rs 6 billion had been allocated for scholarships during the current financial year.

The Minister said Rs 70 billion has been allocated for Higher Education Commission in the current budget.

He said presently around 10,000 Phds are in the country.

He informed the House that physical education is being introduced in schools as part of education policy. He said it will promote sports activities in the country.

Baligh-ur-Rehman said during the recent visit of Amir of Qatar to Pakistan, the Prime Minister has got approved a quota of 200,000 labourers to be sent to Qatar.
