KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan has underlined the need for extending dental education period from four years to five years to make it acceptable at the international level.
The Governor, presiding over the first meeting of the senate of the Jinnah Sindh Medical College at the Governor House here on Sunday, said that he would soon convene a consultative meeting of all the dental educational institutions to prepare five years' syllabus for the dental education.
He said that one-year course should be started for the doctors having four-year degree to meet international standards.
The Governor said that talented students will not be ignored in any way in medical education and they will continue to reap the fruit of their hardwork.
He disagreed with a suggestion to allocate 50 per cent quota each for male and female students in the medical colleges. He said that if there is any shortage of male doctors it should be overcome by establishing boys medical college.
Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad said merit will continue to be observed in admissions.
Besides, MNA Dr. Farooq Sattar and other senate members, Principal Secretary Muhammad Hussain Syed, Chief Adviser Education Syed Wajahat Ali, among others, present.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tariq Rafi briefed the meeting on the two-year progress of the University and its future projects.
The Governor praised the performance of the Jinnah Sindh Medical University in the past two years, and expressed the hope that all out efforts would be made to achieve the status of an institution having an outstanding performance.
Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad directed that the boys medical college and dental college projects under the University should be completed on a priority basis.
The Governor issued instructions to buy more buses to fulfil the transport requirements of the universities.
He also called for establishing more institutions for literacy and research to promote medical education.
He stressed that the universities are not responsible to only generate graduates of high standards, they also need to make efforts to provide better facilities to the people.
Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad said that the University should make progress in the fields of tele-medicine and lab automation to spread medical and diagnostic facilities across the province and benefit the people of the far flung areas.
He expressed the hope that the matters among the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and the University will soon be resolved amicably.
Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad urged the University to come forward and help in the preparation of nutritious food supplements for the mal- nourished children of drought-hit areas.
