imageISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Monday highlighting the need to invest in the most critical areas of health and education said it was imperative to make the country economically prosperous.

Addressing the first convocation of the Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University here at the Pak-China Friendship centre, the President said that Pakistan was fortunate that a large and overwhelming segment of its population comprises of youth.

"If trained and educated properly with relevant professional skills and values, we can use this huge potential to transform this country into a flourishing economy."

In this regard the President said the universities and colleges, especially the higher educational and professional institutions have a critical role to play in imparting quality education specially in the disciplines like medical, allied health sciences, engineering, IT, management and social sciences.

"We need to focus on greater collaboration between the universities and the industry to promote research, job creation and preparing the youth meet the requirements of the market."

He said besides imparting quality education to achieve professional excellence, the youth must be taught religious and cultural values and ethos in their true perspective which were essential pillars for a balanced society.

"We must train our youth in such a way so that they could face every challenge with strength of mind and character," the President said.

President Mamnoon Hussain expressed the confidence that Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University shall continue following a model for such a system of education which provides a blend of quality and values.

The President said the medical profession involves a lifelong process of learning. He said despite the fact that their Alma Mata has laid sound and solid foundation, it was ultimately the struggle and personal interest of the graduates towards learning present day complexities in medicine and treatment procedures that would make them a trustworthy professional in their relevant fields.

"I am confident that you would always uphold the good practices and ethics of your noble profession," the President said and added "success shall always come your way if you are consistent with your pursuits and committed to your cause."

The President also advised them to remember and follow the oath which they have taken for future professional career.

The event was attended by the parents, faculty and the students. Chancellor Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University Prof Dr. Muhammad Ata, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Kamran Jahangir, Chief Executive Officer Shifa International Hospital, Dr Manzoor-ul-Haq Qazi.

He also appreciated the valuable contribution of Late Dr. Zaheer Ahmad and his team for establishing a world class hospital in the name of Shifa International Hospital Islamabad, Tameer-e-Millat Foundation and Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University.

The President congratulated the 11th graduating class of Shifa College of Medicine and the 7th graduating class of Shifa College of Nursing, and particularly those earned Gold and Silver Medals and other distinctions on their outstanding academic achievements.

The President also congratulated the management and faculty of the colleges for their hard work, devotion and dedication towards making these institutes internationally recognized for quality education in Medicine and Nursing.

President Mamnoon Hussain urged the parents to ensure quality education of their daughters as they are responsible for the grooming of the next generations.

Earlier, the President awarded degrees to the MBBS and B.Sc Nursing graduates for the 11th Batch of Shifa College of Medicine and 7th batch of Shifa College for Nursing.

The first position went to Dr Qurat-ul-Ain Ijaz, second to Dr Sidra Chaudhry and 3rd to Dr Saneeya Nasim. Dr Zaheer Ahmed Gold medal was awarded to Quainyat Amin Khan, Dr Mohammad Amin Gold medal went to Eeman Tariq, Dr Nazir Ahmed gold medal for Qurat-ul-Ain Ijaz and Dr Sayyed Tauqir A Shah gold medal also for Qurat-ul-Ain Ijaz for securing first positions in 3rd Professional and Final Professional respectively.

The President awarded five distinctions to students of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), three distinctions for Post RN BSN.

The gold medal went to Sadia Wali for achieving 81.3% and one silver medal to Shah Qasim for 78 percent in Professional examinations of Post RN BSN. The first position went to Ms Hajira Gul and second to Shah Qasim.
