LAHORE: Pakistan on Friday as a goodwill gesture and on humanitarian grounds released 45 Indian fishermen from Karachi’s Malir Jail.
It should be mentioned that Caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso last week had directed the release of Indian fishermen who have already served their sentences.
The authorities released a group of 45 prisoners from Malir Jail who later were boarded on a bus that brought them to Lahore where they were handed over to Indian authorities on the Wagah border.
Pakistan and India routinely arrest fishermen after they cross the maritime boundaries for fishing.
Both countries have not succeeded in determining their water boundaries despite series of dialogue on the issue.
Currently, 482 Indian prisoners are in Pakistani jails whereas 496 Pakistanis are languishing in Indian jails.
Prime Minister Khoso hoped that the Indian government will reciprocate the gesture and release Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentence.
