LAHORE: Another child Ehsan died of measles here at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) on Saturday raising the death toll to 35 in Lahore, while around 60 fresh victims of the disease were admitted to different hospitals in the provincial metropolis.

Out of these affected children, 40 were brought to Mayo Hospital while 13 others were taken to Children’s Hospital and seven to Jinnah Hospital.

The Medical Superintendent Mayo Hospital Dr Zahid Pervez said that affected children are also being kept in “Isolated Ward”. Most of the affected children were brought from Shahdara, China Scheme, Bhatti Gate and other adjoining areas. He said all out facilities are being extended to the victims.

Health department is launching a special mass vaccination campaign against measles in Lahore from April 29 to May 5. During the campaign, children would be vaccinated against measles in all government and private schools.

Secretary Health Punjab Arif Nadim warned that those schools which would refuse to have children vaccinated against measles disease would be sealed forthwith.

Chairing Micro Planning Review Meeting of anti-measles campaign, which was attended by all Deputy Health District Officers of all towns, Secretary Health said that the anti-measles vaccination would be carried out by 900 injectors at fixed points to the children from six months to ten years age. This facility would also be provided in all government hospitals of Lahore.

During the anti-measles campaign, health workers would visit every union council, and at every household at mohalla level, to inform about the presence of vaccination teams to the citizens in their areas.

He directed that public awareness campaign regarding anti-measles vaccination should also be carried out at all areas through banners and steamers, along with announcing about the presence of vaccination teams, through loudspeakers of mosques and other means.

DCO Lahore Rizwan Mehboob said that duties of all TMA officers have been assigned for special anti-measles vaccination campaign, and a vigorous campaign would be launched from April 29 to May 5.

EDO Health Lahore Dr. Zulfiqar Ali pointed out that 600 mobile, 165 schools and 265 fixed teams have been formulated for vaccination, which have also been provided necessary training. He said an epidemic control room has also been established at EDO Health office, with official Phone No. 042-99237028. He said that these teams would vaccinate approximately 350 children, against measles disease, on daily basis.

Secretary Health further directed that special attention should also be paid to ensure proper monitoring of anti-measles campaign for which every Deputy District Officer Health of each town would be held responsible for any negligence.
