KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed provincial and federal law officers to furnish their replies in petition seeking audit of the accounts of the NGOs operating in the province.
Petitioner Rana Faizul Hassan, representing a non-governmental organization United Human Rights Commission, submitted that there is no any structure by which government can supervise the functions, budgets and expenditures of 45000 non-government organizations operating throughout the country.
He stated before the court that there is no such uniform system in country to audit the accounts of the NGOs. He submitted that there was no information about the NGOs working in the country and what were their purpose and the source of their funds.
Citing a report presented before the president of Pakistan, he said that authorities had expressed doubts over the working of 51 NGOs in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhuwa in which 19 belonged to America, 11 to Britain, 5 to Germany, 2 to Spain, 3 to Denmark, 7 to Saudi Arabia and one NGO to Turkey.
He prayed court to direct provincial authorities to put up a mechanism by which there should be audit of the NGOs’ funds and expenditure.
The division bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar put off the hearing of the case till April 4.
