business 400ISLAMABAD: Despite energy challenges, the large-scale manufacturing (LSM) sector posted a growth of 1.26 percent in the first eleven months of the fiscal year 2011-12 as against the same period of last year.

The overall LSM growth during July-May (2011-12) reached to 112.78 points against the production of 111.37 points during July-May (2010-11), according to the data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics here Friday.

The major growth of 0.95 percent was recorded in the indices monitored by the Ministry of Industries as theses increased from 110.52 points during 2010-11 to 112.03 points during the year 2011-12.

Similarly, the indices monitored by the Provincial Bureaus of Statistics grew from 123.98 points to 127.24 points, registering positive growth of 0.64 percent.

However, the industries monitored by the Oil Companies Advisory Committee witnessed negative growth of 0.33 percent as its indices decreased from 83.36 points to 78.52 points, the data revealed.

Even during the month of May 2012, the overall LSM production witnessed growth of 1.40 percent as it went up from 109.53 points during May 2011 to 111.07 points.

During the month of May 2012, the indices monitored by OCAC witnessed increase of 0.19 percent, while that of Ministry of Industries and Provincial Bureaus of Statistics witnessed positive growth of 0.60 and 0.62 percent respectively, the data revealed.

However, as compared to the production of 111.13 during April 2011, the LSM production in May 2012 witnessed nominal decrease of 0.06 percent.

The manufacturing sectors that witnessed positive growth in production during July-May (2011-12) included food beverages and tobacco, output of which increased by 6.44 percent.

Similarly, the output of pharmaceutical increased by 7.84 percent, non- metallic mineral products by 2.68 percent, paper and board by 22.86 percent, textile by 0.45 percent, leather products by 0.68 percent, automobiles by 1.16 percent whereas the production of fertilizers increased by 0.95 percent.

On the other hand, the manufacturing sectors that witnessed negative growth included iron and steel products, production of which decreased by 25.26 percent in 2011-12.

The production of coke and petroleum products deceased by 6.99 percent, electronics by 7.86 percent, chemicals by 2.92 percent, rubber products by 24.93 percent, engineering products by 11.18 percent whereas the production of wood products decreased by 0.91 percent.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Provisional Quantum Index Numbers (QIM) has been computed on the basis of latest production data of 112 items received from sources including Oil Companies Advisory Committee (OCAC), Ministry of Industries and Production and Provincial Bureaus of Statistics.

OCAC provided data of 11 items, Ministry of Industries and Production supplied the data of 36 items and Provincial Bureaus of Statistics provided data for 65 items.
