imageHYDERABAD: Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) showing concerns over closure of Rohri canal has said that the canal irrigates 2.9 million acres agriculture land and its closure may inflict a big lose to growers as well agriculture economy of the country.

Rohri canal was closed due to cracks in Full Fall regulator of the canal and standing crops in command area were suffering badly due to non-availability of water while irrigation department had failed to repair the cracks in time, the growers said in a press release issued here on Sunday after the video link meeting of SCA chaired by Syed Nadeem Qamar, Central President SCA.

Nadeem Qamar, Nabi Bux Sathio, Syed Aijaz Nabi Shah, Zahid Hussain Bhurgri, Ghulam Hassan Chachar, Qabool Muhammad Khatian, Mir Abdul Karim Talpur, Aagha Khadim Hussain Shah and other growers alleged irrigation officials were responsible of the situation as their dereliction aggrieved the situation.

They said irrigation officials failed to carry out repair works during annual canal closure period in January and now officials were stating that irrigation department has issued tender for the work but not a single contractor was willing to acquire the contract.

The growers termed the justification unacceptable and said that irrigation department possessed heavy machinery and could carry out repair works on war footings at its own.

They demanded of Chief Minister Sindh and provincial irrigation minister to take notice of the situation and take stern action against responsible irrigation officers.

They further demanded for looking into matter of de-silting of Phulleli canal where annual de-silting operation was not carried out properly and it may result in acute shortage of irrigation water in tail end areas of Phulleli canal and agricultural losses.
