imageISLAMABAD: The government is undertaking various export promotional activities through trade exhibitions, identified and accessed high-end new markets to increase export of Pakistani fruits.

The high-end markets are South Korea, Australia, Lebanon, United States (US), Mauritius, Bulgaria, Sweden, Latvia and Ireland.

Citing the steps taken by the government to achieve exports target of Pakistani fruits, the sources at Commerce Division on Thursday said Ministry of Commerce under Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2012-15 announced subsidizing 50 percent cost of plant and machinery for dates, processing.

The drawback of local taxes at a rate of 2-4 percent of FOB-realized value of enhanced exports has also been announced.

The sources said through active trade diplomacy, the government was trying to get better market access for local businesses in international markets by concluding Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) with different countries.

A Citrus Development Board is also being formed for development of citrus sector, the sources added.

Moreover, they said Prime Minister had approved in principle establishment of dry port at Sargodha to enhance export of kinds alongwith other products while Ministry of Commerce established Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) to promote exports of fruits.

Regarding steps taken by Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company, the sources said it supported the industry to obtain international certifications.

It also conducted capacity building programmes for growers, processors, pack-houses and exporters on international compliances.

The Company made successful sea freighted shipments of mangoes to European destinations and completed supply chain improvement projects like Pakistan Horti-Fresh, Karachi, Irradiation Facility, Lahore and Apple Grading Plant, Quetta.

The Board of Administrators of Export Development Fund has approved several projects for development of fruits meant for export, the sources added.
