imageISLAMABAD: The government's measures to control inflation resulted in bringing down Consumers Price Index (CPI) to 3.9 percent in January 2015 as compared to 7.9 percent in same month last year.

The headline inflation measured by CPI is on downward trajectory while other inflationary indicators like food inflation declined to 3 percent and non-food 4.5 percent in January as compared to 7.2 percent and 8.4 percent in the same month last year.

The Sensitive Price Indicators (SPIs), which monitor the prices of 53 essential commodities, also witnessed declining trend consecutively for the last eight weeks.

Highlighting the measures adopted by the government to control inflation in the country, sources at Statistics Division on Wednesday said the Prime Minister had written letters to provincial chief ministers to extend benefit of reduction of oil prices to the people by lowering the transportation fares and prices of essential commodities.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) also reviews inflationary trend, prices and supply of essential commodities in its meetings on regular basis.

National Price Monitoring Committee chaired by the Federal Finance Minister also monitors the prices and supply position of essential commodities in consultation with provincial governments and concerned federal Ministries/ Divisions and organization.

Moreover, Pakistan Railways reduced the normal freight by 5 percent across the board and also reduced the fares by 5 percent for the trains including Bolan Mail, Bahauddin Zakaria Express, Fareed Express and Sukkur Express and 3 percent fares of Allam lqbal Express, Awam Express, Karachi Express, Millat Express, Akbar Bugti Express and Jaffer Express.

The Pakistan International Airlines has also reduced fares for various destinations. It also reduced Umrah fares by Rs.7,900.

Ten percent discount has been offered in economy class fares from New York, 25 percent in business class from New York, 20 percent in economy class for Torronto and upto 50 percent in business class from Pakistan to Europe, the United Kingdom and North America.

The sources said provincial governments are also taking appropriate measures to monitor the prices and ensuring smooth supply of commodities so that the benefits of reduction in oil prices be passed on to the common man.
