LAHORE: Poultry products exports of the country can get a major boost if a proper processing system of is evolved on modern lines. This was stated by Vice Chancellor of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Prof. Talat Naseer Pasha while talking to APP on Monday.
He said that poultry products have great export potential, upto $ 2 billion per annum, particularly in middle and far east countries, central Asian states and Russia after their ban on Eurpean Union's products.
He stressed that export of poultry meat would also improve economic condition of poultry farmers. "Therefore, the government should pay heed towards evolving a processing system of poultry products by cooperating with the private sector".
Responding to a question about the current low rate of poultry meat, he said that overproduction and Eid-ul-Azha when red meat is in vogue, might be the reasons of low rate of poultry meat.
He said livestock sector contributes 55 per cent to agriculture GDP, and 12 per cent, including 4 per cent of poultry products, to national GDP.
He said that poultry is the most vibrant sector in Pakistan with an annual growth of 8-10 per cent.
The Vice-Chancellor said the varsity was closely working with Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab and private sector for the development of livestock and allied sectors.
