imageISLAMABAD: Imports of transport group into the country witnessed negative growth of 8.21 percent during the first eight months of the current fiscal year when compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The overall transport group imports in to the country were recorded at $1.38 billion during July-February (2013-14) as compared to the imports of $1.503 billion during July-February (2012-13), according to the latest data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The imports of road motor vehicles (build unit, Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Semi Knocked Down (SKD) decreased by 16.24 percent by going down from $ 954.24 million last year to $799.315 million during current year.

The imports of Completely Build Units (CBU) decreased from $346.24 million last year to $237.289 million during current year, showing a decrease of 31.47 percent.

Among CBU, imports of buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles witnessed growth of 8.62 percent by going up from $98.362 during first eight months of 2012-13 to $106.839 million during same period of current fiscal year.

Similarly the imports of motor cars decreased by 49 percent by falling down from $247.276 million last year to $126.114 million while that of motor cycles surged by $620.27 percent by going up from $602,000 last year to $4.336 million this year.

Imports of CKD and SKD also decreased by 7.54 percent and its imports went down from $368.873 million during first eight months of FY-13 to $341.072 million during same period of FY-14.

Among CKD and SKD units, imports of buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles witnessed a decrease of 3.76 percent, imports of which decreased from $83.797 million last year to 80.546 million this year.

Similarly imports of motor cars and motor cycles decreased by 8.07 percent and 11.14 percent respectively.

The imports of aircraft, ships and boats increased by 15.78 percent during July-February 2013-14 as compared to same period of current year.

The imports of aircraft, ships and boats increased from $474.308 million last year to $549.143 million this year.

On month on month basis, imports of transport group in February 2014 decreased by 7.92 percent and 44.45 percent when compared with the imports in February 2013 and January 2014 respectively.

Imports of Transport group in February, 2014 were recorded at $108.167 million whereas the imports of transport group in February 2013 and January 2014 were recorded at $117.468 million and $194.712 million respectively.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan's trade deficit narrowed by 4.89 percent during first eight months of current fiscal year as exports expanded by 6.2 percent while imports witnessed increase of 1.17 percent as compared to the same period of last year.
