imageISLAMABAD: Food group exports from the country during first eight months of current fiscal year increased by 8.56 percent when compared to the exports of the corresponding period of last year.

According the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), during the period from July-February (2013-14), food exports were recorded at $3.147 billion against the exports of $2.899 billion in July-February (2012-13),

According to breakup figures, exports of rice during the period under review increased by 22.56 percent to $1,450.038 million as compared to the exports of $1,183.103 million.

Exports of fish and fish preparations increased by 11.31 percent by going up from $199.789 million last year to $222.376 million this year while the exports of fruits increased from $275.405 million to $338.248 million, showing an increase of 22.82 percent.

The exports of vegetables during the first eight months of current fiscal year increased by 10.90 percent as compared to the same period of last year.

The vegetable exports during July-February 2013-14 were recorded at $138.998 million as compared to $125.334 million in February 2012-13.

Similarly, the exports of leguminous vegetables (pulses) increased by 84.87 percent by going up from $1.527 million to $2.823 million while the exports of oil, seeds, nuts and kernals increased by 213 percent, from $192.07 million to $67.250 million.

Export of meat and meat preparations from the country also increased from $141.960 million to $158.382 million, showing an increase of 11.57 percent.

The food commodities that witnessed negative growth in trade included tobacco, exports of which decreased by 9 percent by falling from $12.553 million to $11.430 million.

Wheat exports from the country also decreased by 83.67 percent by falling from $43.509 million to $7.105 million, spices by 19.36 percent, from $40.761 million to $32.868 million while the exports of sugar decreased by 8.96 percent, from $217.206 million to $197.751 million.

The exports of all other food commodities also witnessed decrease of 18.28 percent in exports by going down from the trade of $636.489 million to $530.119 million.

Meanwhile, on year-on-year basis, the food exports increased by 22.39 percent in February 2014 to $488.948 million when compared to the exports of $399.500 million in February 2013.

On month-on-month basis, the exports in February 2014 however decreased by 6.71 percent when compared to the exports of $524.122 million in January 2014, the data revealed.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan's trade deficit narrowed by 4.89 percent during first eight months of current fiscal year as exports expanded by 6.2 percent while imports witnessed increase of 1.17 percent as compared to the same period of last year.
