PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak while expressing concern over financial crisis of the universities in the province has asked the Vice Chancellors to take bold decisions and make concrete steps on realistic grounds in order to control expenditures and increase resources of the universities instead of waiting for miracles.
He was addressing the Vice Chancellors Conference of the Universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at CM Secretariat Peshawar on Monday. On this occasion the challenges faced by the universities and recommendations to cope with it were taken into stock and necessary decisions were taken.
Similarly he asked them to sit together and explore the modus operandi of not only to make universities self sufficient and stable financially but academically adopt such subjects and produce such experts having a market demand at all levels so that the outgoing students could later prove their worth in all sectors of life.
The Chief Minister noted with concern that expenditures of the universities went much beyond its meager resources so much so that the universities employees could not be paid salaries and arrears well in time. He underlined the need to curtail expenditures and find ways and means to enhance resources in the universities so that it could retain its existence and future of thousands of students could not be put at stake.
Pervez Khattak said that quality education was top most priority of the present provincial govt and for this purpose we could go to any extent. He said that it was unfortunate that we were seeing our universities in crisis after 18th Amendment and provincial autonomy.
However he said, we have to get through these challenges with prudence and consistence thus to choose paths of success.
He said that it was agreed upon during handing over universities to the provinces that the provinces would unable to provide funds to the universities until resources were provided for this purpose under NFC award by the Federal govt. However he said that our provincial govt provided all necessary funds to the universities including payment of salaries to the employees sans the much awaited NFC Award.
The Chief Minister on reservations about security of the universities and Vice Chancellors as well as deploying police contingents for the purpose made it clear that the provincial govt has decided and empowered all the departments and institutions to make the security arrangements by its own. However he said that help of police could be sought for training of such security personnel.
The Chief Minister approved the construction of remaining 8 KM boundary wall around Agriculture University Peshawar and accompanying second vehicle by the Vice Chancellors by the VCs during journeys for security cover.
Similarly he directed for addressing the observations of VCs and taking the universities administration in confidence while adopting the amendments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act 2012. Earlier the Chief Minister offered congregational Fateha for the departed soul of Vice Chancellor Gomal University Prof Amanullah Akhter.
