LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Thursday disposing of a petition for directions to delay first phase of local government elections in Punjab directed the petitioner to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan was hearing the petition filed by Mujlis Wahdatul Muslimeen.
The party had requested the court to issue directions for delaying the first phase of local government elections in Punjab owing to Muharram.
The court directing the petitioner to approach the ECP observed that election commission was an independent institution.
"It was its prerogative to hold or delay the elections", he added.
