imageISLAMABAD: The current monsoon heavy rains pose many risks for slum dwellers located in different areas of the federal capital, where the concerned authorities have done very little in this regard to avoid any untoward incident.

Different slums are located in sectors F-6/1, F-6/2, F-7/4, G-7/1, G-7/2, G-7/3, I-9, G-8/4 and I-10/3 fearing that their houses could collapse during these heavy rains.

Most of the slums comprise mud houses and dwellings made from logs, straws, dry grass and tattered clothes and plastic sheets. These houses also have no proper drainage system and prone to threat of collapse due to dripping roofs during rain. Street water also enters the rooms making the temporary mud walls weaker.

Afshan Faisal a slum inhabitant at G-7/1 while talking to APP said that heavy rain had flooded their slum dwelling, and her husband was trying hard to save their house from collapse.

Basiran Bibi in a choked voice and with tears rolling down from her eyes said she desired to live with her family in a concrete house. She said no one could imagine miseries of the people living in slum areas.

"During heavy rainfall, the slums present a dirty look and it is hard to imagine that someone could dare to live in these makeshift houses with their families," she added.

When contacted to Capital Development Authority (CDA) official informed that they are making every possible efforts to take safety measures for slum dwellers in the pre monsoon rains.

The CDA department had already initiated a clean-up operation of nullahs in the capital to prevent flooding of the surrounding areas by stormwater, said the CDA official.

He further said that majority of the capital's nullahs are either clogged with trash or surrounded by slums that are at risk of flooding during rains.
