I began my career on November 25, 1970 in the marketing division of Esso Eastern Inc. (now called Exxon). After Esso’s nationalization in 1976, I joined Bank of Credit & Commerce Int’l in October 1977, and for 17 years served this bank, twice in its UK, and once each in Oman, UAE, and Hong Kong, and finally in its Pakistan operations during 1990-91. In 1994, after successfully supervising the team assigned to wind up BCCI Pakistan operations and the creation of Habib Credit & Exchange Bank Ltd. (wherein I served as the Head of Credit & Marketing, and Company Secretary), I joined MCB Bank as Principal of its Staff College. Later, from 1995 to 1998, I served in Gulf Commercial Bank (initially called Schon Bank Ltd.) as GM Correspondent Banking &Treasury, and then as Regional General Manager for Sindh and Baluchistan. In 1999, I took over as Hatton National Bank’s Chief Rep. for Pakistan. In 2001, I became the MD of Pak Gulf Leasing Co. Ltd., and in 2005, I re-joined Hatton National Bank Ltd. as its Chief Rep. for Pakistan, a position from which I retired on February 20, 2009.

Wrote the chapter on Bank Supervision in the “History of SBP” authored by Mr. Ashraf Janjua, former Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. Currently I am writing a book on “Advance Risk Management” based on the experiences of the ongoing global economic recession.

Advisory: Between 1992 and 2004, advised State Bank of Pakistan, Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan, National Accountability Bureau and Leasing Association of Pakistan, on specific policy and regulatory issues. Until 2009 was a member of the Academic and Editorial Boards of the IBP.
Articles: I regularly contributed articles to and the IBP Journal and columns to the daily Dawn. Now I write a weekly column (every Tuesday) for the daily Business Recorder.
Foreign exposure: I have visited 30 countries during my service with BCCI, Gulf Commercial Bank and Hatton National Bank Plc., and served in 5 of these countries.
