Fruit export increases by 28pc in ten months

ISLAMABAD: The export of fresh fruit from the country registered an increase of 27.96 percent during the last ten months of current financial year.

The fruit export from the country during the period from July-April 2011-12 was recorded at 654,205 metric tons worth US$ 322.43 million as compared to the export of 584,725 metric tons of US$ 251.55 million same period of corresponding year.

According the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the export of leguminous vegetable (pulses) witnessed tremendous growth as the export of the pulses were increased by 1,640 percent during last ten months of current financial year.

About 8,463 metric tons of pulses of different varieties exported to the period under review and earned about US$6.351 million as against the export of only 340 metric tons of US$ 0.365 million during same period of last year, it added.

However, during the period under review, the export of vegetables remained on down track as it posted negative growth of 37.71 percent.

Meanwhile, the export of meat and meat preparations posted 16 percent increase during the period from July-April 2011-12 as about 45,246 metric tons of meat and meat products worth US$ 141.16 million exported which was recorded at 42,385 metric tons of US$ 122.03 million during same period of last year.

The export of other food commodities which posted positive growth in their export included sugar by 100 percent, tobacco by 1.92 percent rice other then basmati by 5.22 percent and all others 42 percent.
